Does Android run on my x86 based machine? |

This is hard to say. If you have a netbook, the answer is most probably yes. Most people working on Android for x86 platform have these devices in mind. But as the article here shows that current versions of Android (1.6+) already work quite well on a variety of devices, starting on very old Vaio Laptops up to MacBooks. So, if you want to be sure, you'll have to download a live image, burn a CD or write the image to a USB pen drive and start the engines!
The Android x86 installer from the download section is built using a modern kernel, patched to fit the needs of Android. So, if your hardware is supported by the current kernel version, it looks quite good!
Many devices have support built into the kernel. But sometimes you need a firmware. That is the case for some Wifi drivers. Check your kernel messages with dmesg. Also check the loaded modules with lsmod
